I was working on a pic last night and it all of a sudden came to me that I have been selecting a certain type of model. Most with fly away hair in one way or another.

Then, even though I personally like the effect in many instances, spend hours getting it under control after the fact. I thought this through to its logical conclusion I think;

I am straightening, eliminating for others. But in the world I am familiar with in the old days, the editor would make that decision, not me. Has this somehow changed other than personal projects?

If a model wanted her hair straight, it seems to me should would either ask for an MUA, demand one or have her hair the way she wanted in the first place.

Fly away hair sounds like you are photographing people with toupée's....or maybe wigs....

I could see that being a problem under windy conditions....unless you are going for the Chicago headshot look.

Not exactly. I mean hair that is inherently not a part of the  shot. I shot at the Bellevue Hilton yesterday, inside, so no, I was not going to the Chicago headshot look.

I can absolutely assure you, the dozen or so models I have shot with the kind of hair I am talking about were not using a toupe" either.

I can't tell if you are:

1. Having problem with fly away hairs, 2. having to change straight to wavy & wavy to straight or 3. both.

One requires a hair stylist. The other requires hair spray or styling gel.

There was a specific question in my post:

I don't do hair spray. I am a hobby shooter and the whole idea of a hair stylist for a tf shoot amuses me. If they want a hair stylist, MUA, they should get one and I will shoot what they come up with for me.

yeah, cleaning up fly hair aways can be a tedious task.  I wonder where all the bald models are? smile

There was one on this and a few other net sites. I think her name was Kat. Was she ever a tall drink of water. I think she moved to Crete or someplace warm. Smart girl.

Which editor? The magazine editor or art director may give instructions to the retoucher to "edit" the hair. Much of it is the judgment of whoever is doing the retouching with the instructions from the client, if any. Does the photographers today have the taste to do the same today? Some do and some do not.

There are portrait clients and wannabe models who do go to a stylist before a shoot. Few will have the foresight to bring one with them. Hobby shooters may be better than professionals and some of the work done by them are very detailed and well orchestrated.

Thank you. I like wild hair and apparently am choosing a lot of my models because of it.  I didn't realize I was doing it until this one I working on now.

It is an oxymoron to go  back and straighten it out after I spent so much trouble taking pictures of it in the first place.
